Evening Session 3
Wednesday, 29 September 2021 | 19:00-20:00 | Room 1
The European Health Unition Initiative (EHUI) champions a greater role for the European Union in health, across Europe as well as on the global stage, and calls on European leaders to develop a Global Health Policy alongside the UN and its specialised agencies, especially a strengthened World Health Organization. But what can more European responsibility in global health look like concretely? Which instruments and institutions are needed, and can trust be rebuilt in the wake of lacking solidarity during COVID-19 vaccine distribution?
In this fireside chat, EHUI founding member Ilona Kickbusch sits down with Chikwe Ihekweazu, recently appointed Director General of Health Emergency Intelligence at WHO HQ and Head of the new WHO Berlin Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence. Join the two as they discuss the role of the Hub in assessing and responding to global health emergencies, draw on Dr Chikwe’s experience in outbreak management, and explore what it will take for Europe to prove herself a true ally to the Global South in the joint fight against global disease threats of the future.
