W2 WORKSHOP
Organised by World Health Organization
The European region is the most affected by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their growth is startling. The impact of the major NCDs is alarming: taken together, these conditions account for an estimated 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden in the region.
The private sector needs to be part of effective multi-sectoral action on NCDs through various types of engagement. A balance of public and private contributions to prevention and control is one of the key components of a successful national NCD response. Governments can also make use of NGOs and academia in several important roles, including acting as a ‘bridge’ between government and the private sector.
This session will explore lessons learned from successful and unsuccessful examples of private sector engagement to date; and discuss its role in the effective multi-sectoral action on NCDs, including options ensuring due regard to real, perceived and potential conflicts of interest. We will also focus on domestic, bilateral and multilateral, and innovative financing of NCD prevention and control. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore how to use existing and new resources effectively to achieve maximum health impact from NCD prevention and control.
